📝 Whenever people feel they are stuck with their fitness progress because they see no increase in strength, performance, muscle or fat loss the first usual suspects are:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1) The same (suboptimal) program is followed all year round with only slight tweaks here and there (chest fly machine instead of cable flys for example).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2) If a program is followed then only for a few workouts before jumping onto the next promising one found online.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3) No program is followed at all and instead every workout is randomized and / or only exercises being done that look fun and exotic on social media.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
➕ But there is a simple way out of this misery! Yes, you do have to follow a program in order to progress. However if you want to keep sustainably progressing you cannot follow the same routine for the rest of the year, of course. Besides changing training parameters like sets, reps, intensity and rest times within a periodized training approach you can also utilize the following tweaks:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1) Instead of exchanging the whole exercise (e.g. conventional deadlifts against loaded hyperextensions) you can also use a variation of it to set a new stimulus (e.g. doing snatch grip deadlifts instead of conventional deadlifts).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2) You can also adjust your tempo (e.g. 3110 to 51X0) and therefore adjust time under tension and or play with elements of deadstops, isometric holds and explosive concentric phases.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

3) You can change your grips. I like to utilize the whole variety of grips (overhand, underhand and neutral) within my programs and regularly change them for better progression. Also think about utilizing fat grips!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Allowing a lifter to choose the order of their workouts throughout a week based on their readiness is a good way to increase enjoyability and adherence to a training program without sacrificing strength gains.
.
For example, if a lifter knows their lower body strength day is the hardest workout of the week, they would have the freedom to perform it on a day of the week when they would feel most ready to do so. This can be after a weekend, a rest day, or after a normal day at work.
.
On the other hand, if they just finished a stressful, longer than normal day at work, and didn’t get much sleep the night before, it may be good idea to perform one of the easier workouts scheduled in that week.

Conclusion: If it doesn’t take away from your progress, choose flexibility

Allowing a lifter to choose the order of their workouts throughout a week based on their readiness is a good way to increase enjoyability and adherence to a training program without sacrificing strength gains.

For example, if a lifter knows their lower body strength day is the hardest workout of the week, they would have the freedom to perform it on a day of the week when they would feel most ready to do so. This can be after a weekend, a rest day, or after a normal day at work.
.
On the other hand, if they just finished a stressful, longer than normal day at work, and didn’t get much sleep the night before, it may be good idea to perform one of the easier workouts scheduled in that week.

Conclusion: If it doesn’t take away from your progress, choose flexibility

Anti rotation drills are a great way of working the midsection of the body and shifting your focus away from repetitive curls and planks. During this exercise as you extend the arms and increase the lever you will feel a greater pull and greater intensity of contraction. The forward lunge narrows the base of support and makes it even more challenging and don’t forget to finish off the exercise by bringing your arms back in front of you before returning to your starting position. Individual components of this exercise come together nicely to make this a burner! Tell me how it feels!

Effort is the key determinant of the level of motor unit recruitment that is used in any muscular contraction. Increasing the level of effort in a rep (by pushing or pulling on the bar harder) will increase the number of motor units that are being used.

However, the level of motor unit recruitment does not determine the level of mechanical tension that the muscle fibers experience. This is determined by the force-velocity relationship.

If you're like me, push days are one of your favourite days. Getting a nice chest and triceps pump with some boulder shoulders never hurt anyone. I get asked frequently how many exercises to do on a push day, or even a pull day for that matter and how to structure them. For me, I like to choose 1 to 2 exercises for my shoulders, triceps, chest and even core. That being said I also know my chest is overdeveloped in comparison to my shoulders and triceps so maybe manipualting that rule so I do 1 exercise for my chest and 2 for triceps and shoulders could be of benefit for me. Notice I don't say you have to do one specific exercise in any category. Instead, I like using a bank of exercises in each category which means you can keep things fresh and change up the exercises each month, week or even each workout. I also like taking 1-3 minutes if rest and staying 1 rep short of failure so I ensure consistent progress. A sample push day for me would be: incline press, overhead press, weighted dips, lateral raises, a superset of tricep kickbacks and skull crushers, wood choppers and planks.⁠

I HATE rest days but there are reasons why we NEED them.  Every time we go to the gym for an intense workout, we create microscopic tears in our muscles. This essentially enables our body to adapt and become stronger and more resilient to training stimlulus.  Small microscopic tears aren’t a problem but when we overdo our training or don’t have rest days, those intentional “micro-injuries” can easily become real injuries that prevent us from training.  Weight training is just the beginning of the muscle-building process. Whilst it might seem counterproductive not to be working our muscles for them to grow, rest is the stage in the cycle where we break down our muscle tissue so that it can adapt to the newly introduced strain and grow back stronger.
For our muscles to grow stronger, they need to be allowed sufficient rest and nutrition for the recovery to take place.
