I had two major challenges when I started meditating: 鈦

1. Making time to meditate in the first place. 鈦
2. Meditating for a full forty-five minutes, which is what is generally prescribed in the Heartfulness practice. 鈦

Real talk: when I was in college, waking up and meditating first thing was WAY less important than immediately grabbing my phone to scroll through Facebook. Cleaning was way less important than staying up until 2AM reading Harry Potter fan fiction. The consequence? The rare moments that I did meditate back then were HARD. I would try to sit for the full forty minutes, only to give up after five minutes because I was struggling to calm my heart, body, and mind. Not surprising given how bad my habits were. 鈦

So what helped? 鈦

Step One was to seriously commit to meditation and incorporate it into my day, no excuses. No matter what, every morning I was going to sit and meditate. Every evening, I was going to do the cleaning technique. 鈦

Step Two was to start small. 鈦
鈦
Instead of trying to force myself to sit for the full forty minutes, I instead started with five minutes. Once I became comfortable with those five minutes, I added on another five, and then another five, and so on and so forth, until I was able to sit comfortably for the full forty-five minutes. I applied this same perspective to the cleaning technique. 鈦

If you鈥檙e just starting to meditate, but are finding it challenging to sit. start here. Start with those five minutes. Become comfortable with those five minutes, then gradually build yourself up to a place where you can meditate longer. Be gentle with yourself 鈥 this is a practice for a reason. :) 鈦

Prayers purpose is to transform you. People usually think that transformation comes from above, as a result of having prayed. But it is the offering of the prayer that transforms us, rather than its response. This transformation happens in the very moment that we pray. True prayer is its own answer, you see. To forge an intimate connection with your Maker, your heart must be innocent and pure. Guilt is utterly distractive. It is like lead in the heart. The guilty heart hides itself from the Divine, isolating itself in its self-made prison. In that case, how will we bathe in the restorative rays of the Source? .

I鈥檒l be totally honest 鈥 it鈥檚 really been in the last year or so that I鈥檝e found my stride with this practice, in spite of the years I鈥檝e been at it. Here were the excuses that I let hold me back: 鈦

*I don鈥檛 have time to meditate. 鈦
*I鈥檓 young. I can always start again tomorrow. 鈦
*I don鈥檛 feel like it. 鈦
*I have no interest in myself. 鈦
*I鈥檓 too tired. 鈦
*But scrolling through Instagram seems like a better use of my time right now鈥.鈦
*I can鈥檛 stop myself from thinking!鈦
*I don鈥檛 know if meditation is something I鈥檓 ever going to be good at. 鈦
*I can manage my life without meditation. 鈦
鈦
I probably have 1000 more lined up in the back of my brain and in my past. It was only when I finally trashed these excuses that I really started doing the work to practice meditation each day. And once I refused to let those excuses back in, I started seeing real, strong, tangible progress in my practice. 鈦
鈦
Which isn鈥檛 to dismiss how challenging meditation can be, because it is. And there are definitely still days when I would rather watch a YouTube video at midnight instead of doing my cleaning. Instead of looking at my aforementioned list as roadblocks to progress, I instead started looking at them as obstacles that I could overcome with my own self-interest and willpower. 鈦

The theme of this week is the 7th limb of yoga - Dhyana. Dhyana involves concentrating on a point of focus. According to the yoga sutra, the purpose of meditation is to interrupt the fluctuations of the normal mental activity. The mind is very difficult to quieten, it incessantly feeds us glimpses from the past along with an endless stream of thoughts and feelings. The theme of this week is the 7th limb of yoga - Dhyana. Dhyana involves concentrating on a point of focus. According to the yoga sutra, the purpose of meditation is to interrupt the fluctuations of the normal mental activity. The mind is very difficult to quieten, it incessantly feeds us glimpses from the past along with an endless stream of thoughts and feelings. Growing up with meditating parents made for an interesting childhood. My dad is a trainer, so we grew up with people traipsing in and out of our home as they sat with my dad for individual and group meditations; eventually, they became a part of our extended family. Every few months, we would travel to various meditation centers around the country, where we would connect and reconnect with the friends that we made playing on the playground and buying popsicles from the snack bar while our parents meditated. The kids that I hung out with then are some of my best friends now. 鈦

Even though I grew up knowing I would meditate, I resisted once I got to college, rebelling against the foundation I grew up with and thinking that I鈥檇 be able to figure out life without it. But it was that community I grew up with, the friends that I shared this common bond of meditation with, that reminded me just how beneficial of a tool meditation is. 鈦

I鈥檝e been practicing @heartfulness Meditation for nine years, and I鈥檝e been a trainer for four years. Each aspect of the practice (relaxation, meditation, cleaning, and prayer) has benefitted my life exponentially: I am grounded and centered in inner peace throughout the day; I sleep better; I am more empathetic and compassionate; I am efficient at work and in life; I am more positive and less anxious; and all around, I just FEEL better. 鈦

Prayer should be offered in such a way that it transforms into meditation. Truly, it is an eruption of the heart, highlighting the pang of separation from the Beloved. `I can bear this no longer,鈥 it says. I am reminded of one couplet from my childhood: `O Lord, please visit my little hut at least once. I will treat you so nicely, so lovingly, that you will forget your heavenly abode.鈥 Prayer is, in a way, an inner cry where pearls of sorrow slowly flow down the face and beautify the heart's inner complexities. This pang of the heart serves to keep us glued to the cherished object, and eventually, like a river flowing into the sea, prayerfulness resolves in meditative togetherness with the Source.

The goal of meditation is NOT to eliminate thoughts. The goal is to be at peace internally in spite of those thoughts. Whether you鈥檝e meditated a few times or you鈥檝e been meditating for many years, you have probably experienced a meditation during which you just could not turn your mind off. 鈦
鈦
That doesn鈥檛 mean you鈥檙e bad at meditation. :) I think a lot of us have a tendency to shelve meditation after the first couple of tries because we have a hard time quieting our minds (I know I did). But this a practice for a reason. So what are some of the things you can do to ease those thoughts and to make it easier to meditate? 鈦
鈦
1. When you feel thoughts arising, don鈥檛 give them your attention. Gently push them away and return your attention to the focus of your meditation. 鈦
鈦
In Heartfulness Meditation, that focus is the source of light in your heart. Giving thoughts more attention just makes them more powerful, so redirect your attention to your heart and try to hold it there.鈦
鈦
2. Commit to the Heartfulness Cleaning technique.鈦
鈦
One of the many reasons this technique is so helpful is because it eases the negativity or heaviness that surrounds. Removing that heaviness makes it easier to not give in to your thoughts and to mediate on that source of light in your heart.鈦
鈦
3. Write it out. 鈦
鈦
I鈥檓 an overthinker/overworrier, and I鈥檓 really good at giving into those thoughts/worries. To get away from that bad habit, I like writing out whatever is bothering in my diary so I can get it out of my system. This helps me to process, then solution accordingly,鈦

4. Be gentle with yourself. 鈦
鈦
Are you surprised that I said this? :) Meditation is a practice for a reason. It is impossible to be perfect at it from the start. The key to finding success with it is to develop willpower and to take interest in your progress. The more and more you practice, the easier it is to regulate your thoughts.鈦

芦Mucho depende de lo que realmente queremos. Ciertamente encontraremos tiempo para cosas que nos interesan. Para las cosas que no nos interesan, incluso si tenemos tiempo, huiremos de ellas. Por lo tanto, no se trata de encontrar tiempo. 驴Tenemos el inter茅s?

Si lo hacemos, entonces encontraremos el tiempo. El 茅xito en la espiritualidad, como en educaci贸n, carrera o cualquier otro campo, depende de tres principios: - 驴De verdad lo quieres? 驴Est谩s interesado?
- 驴Est谩s comprometido?
- 驴Qu茅 haces por eso?

Dharana is our theme of the week, the 6th limb of yoga 馃鈥嶁檪锔. Dharana means focused concentration. It is about fixing the mind to one specific point. When we focus the mind intensely into one point, the rest of the mind tends to quiet down. The dharana that Patanjali refers to is an intentional state of absorption and focus. It can be actively practised and honed like any other skill. This practice of concentration leads to a deeper understanding of the self. So this week a lot of asanas were balance themed and inspired a greater level of focus and attention. Cleaning is a more active process than meditation: it鈥檚 a mental detoxification during which you are actively making the suggestion that any thoughts or impressions of the day are leaving you from the back of your head down to your torso in the form of smoke or vapor.鈦

It鈥檚 always recommended to do the cleaning technique at night, immediately once you get home from school/work or right before you go to bed as a way to help ease any impressions from the day. But doing cleaning isn鈥檛 restricted to evenings. 鈦

Example: last Tuesday (a.k.a The Day Before Training), I was STRESSED. I was on a train heading to the training location and felt like I was going to burst. Knowing that I needed to stay present, I closed my eyes on the train and did the cleaning technique for about fifteen minutes. I immediately felt better: my head felt clearer, my anxiety was at bay, I felt rested, and I felt more confident that I鈥檇 be able to manage this training comfortably and confidently. 鈦

My challenge for you guys: whenever you鈥檙e feeling stressed or overwhelmed, or as you鈥檙e getting ready for bed, try the cleaning technique out for a few minutes, and see how you feel.
