This week we welcomed our 2019 cohort into the DDCSP family 🌱 For the next two months, scholars will travel across the state to explore the intersections of nature conservation and environmental justice 🌱 Our first trip took us to Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center, where our guiding questions focused on land, solidarities, and home. How do we build and strengthen reciprocal relations with land, with each other, and to home? 📸William Walker VI 📍Duwamish Land

🔍 Any Ideas? 💡
It’s a huge “pond” where sand is pumped into it via that black pipe visible at the top (if you zoom in). And the pine trees give you a sense of scale.
This is from a sand/gravel mining operation in the Sandhills region of North Carolina. Yes, the sand is kinda orange here, especially when wet! In Switzerland where I grew up the sand was grey, and when I ordered and received my first load of sand here I thought they delivered me some fake stuff 😂... 🙈

We're halfway through WWANC and WEA’s Women and Climate Change Resilience Training in Kenya! During this five-day accelerator, local women from across Kenya—many of whom live in dry counties experiencing minimal and inconsistent rain throughout the year—are working together and immersing themselves in critical climate solutions like environmentally friendly water management and rain harvesting technology that can be used in their communities. By catalyzing and scaling these kinds of solutions, these leaders are better equipped to protect their communities from threats such as drought, lack of access to clean water, food insecurity, and biodiversity collapse.⠀

What can we do to stop climate change and fight for environmental justice? *
If you read my last post, you will see that the root problem lies in our capitalist economic system, which exploits natural resources and the Earth for profit by its nature. *

We need to implement an economic system rooted not in profit-making, but in meeting the needs of all people, ensuring justice, and liberating marginalized groups from oppression. *

One of the most marginalized peoples are the indigenous people - the native inhabitants who were displaced, genocided, exploited, and repressed by settlers from the USA to Canada to Mexico to Central/South America, Australia, and more. We must empower indigenous communities and restore non-destructive ways of life that prioritize preservation and sustainability. Our way of life - mass-consumption and industrialism - have to change and people’s needs must be at the forefront. *

Environmental justice means investing in clean energy and divesting from all fossil fuels - not because it’s profitable - but because it’s right. It means dedicating capital, labor, and resources to cleaning up the planet, reforestation, reducing toxic emissions, etc. *

Emergency halting almost all productions of fossil fuels and oil fracking except what is absolutely necessary can allow us to redirect the workers, money, and infrastructure in place to building clean public transportation, clean energy sources, clean means of recycling and reusing, etc. immediately, without delay because corporate executives don’t want their billions of dollars to go towards meaningful change. *

We can also restore land rights to the indigenous people and promote indigenous environmental activists who have been caring for the planet and land for several hundreds of years. *

You might see amazing products like plastic-less water bubbles, zero-waste machines, etc. but they aren’t effective because a few people monopolize on them so the public cannot enjoy their benefits. We can implement these innovations on a broad scale across the nation so they actual go to help people without the profit motive getting in the way. *

This is just the beginning!

Soil is the world’s single largest reservoir of carbon. It sequesters and stores excess carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere while producing our food. Vegetation draws down CO2 and locks it in the soil through photosynthesis and biological systems to create soil organic carbon (SOC), the most important factor in the health and fertility of soil. And scientists now agree that SOC loss is the most important factor in chronic global degradation and erosion of soil. Spending time today around the coast of North Carolina studying sharks and rays 🦈🦈 The craziest thing is hearing about the local fisheries politics. It’s a constant balance of keeping the fish populations at healthy levels and appeasing the commercial and even recreational fishermen. There’s so many gray areas in trying to keep green. No one talks about that enough! .

Ok friends, honest post time.
😕
I was stoked to find an alternative to plastic dry erase markers last summer, and used a big chunk of my supply money from parents to buy 35 refillable dry erase markers and several bottles of ink from Auspen. They were expensive. They came individually wrapped in plastic. I thought- hey- if they last me years it will be worth it! Unfortunately... these did NOT work out well for me. My teacher set: great! Still going strong after a year of use. The kids’ set? Not so much. They worked great up until it was time to refill them. I dutifully followed the directions to refill, but in a day or two those markers would be dry again! I also discovered that the soft aluminum body was wayyyyy too easy for my babes to crush, accidentally or on purpose, as kids are wont to do! 😬
🤦🏼‍♀️
Sometimes this happens- we get super excited about a zero waste “upgrade”, and it turns out to be more wasteful. I’ve definitely done a fair share of beating myself up for this mistake, and wondering if I’m just not refilling correctly? My sense is that these aren’t quite built for use by 6 year olds multiple times a day. Next year, I’m going back to Expo. And I’ll continue to send the dried markers to Crayola for their Colorcycle program, which burns the markers for fuel. It’s not exactly sustainable- but sometimes we have to accept we don’t live in a perfect world!
👋
Anyone else have a #zerowastefail to share to make me feel less alone?

June 19, 1865:
The day that the last slaves were freed in Galveston, Texas -- more than 2 years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. This Juneteenth, we reflect on the words of Civil Rights Leader Fannie Lou Hamer: "Until I am free, you are not free either." Let us continue to remember those who may be physically free, but are unjustly incarcerated or bounded by a system that continues to exploit and dehumanize their existence.

Daily reminder that gender justice and climate justice are inextricably linked.
.
Women are disproportionately affected by the harmful impacts of climate change on water, land, and clean air. Women walk farther when water and firewood run out, work harder to feed their families when erratic weather wreaks havoc on crops, and die at higher rates than men when natural disasters strike.
.
We must take action now. For us, that means supporting projects that consider the gendered impacts of environmental damage and climate change, and that promote a more just and equitable society.
.
Link in our bio to see a new piece by Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland, and Terry Odendahl, our President & CEO, on why we must act now on gender and climate justice.

from @treempowerment - Black people in Galveston, Texas got the news on this day that they were free, even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed two and a half years prior. Black people continue to fight for equality because liberation cannot mean having to breathe contaminated air or drink toxic water because you are Black. Nevertheless, even recent data shows that being Black makes this trend far more likely than their white counterparts. So we commemorate this day as a reminder that Black liberation must happen within Black communities. And appreciate those who fought for Black liberation to get us to this point. #juneteenth #environmentaljustice - #regrann

Black people in Galveston, Texas got the news on this day that they were free, even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed two and a half years prior. 😒"Do you ever feel, like a plastic bag?" --Katy Perry
Yes, sometimes I feel like a plastic bag floating around...🙄 wait that not the point, the point is that because what us humans are doing (using a lot of plastic products) it has resulted in the suffering of many other species. That is why I made this piece of garment, it is made out of plastic bags and I am trying to show people how much are we marrying to this plastic culture, and what it feels like for other living beings on earth that are suffering from what we have done. This is part of environmental injustice as well. 😿

The demand for minerals and resources is higher than ever, but they are increasingly produced by some of the world's most vulnerable people in conditions that would never be allowed in high-income countries. Last night my colleagues and I in the Senate Majority passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CCPA) to address the severe effects of climate change and generate solutions by cutting greenhouse gases, diverting the state’s energy reliance to renewable sources, and creating green jobs to promote environmental justice in New York State.

Our species is bonded by so much, and it’s often the very things that make us human that creates that bond. Recently we’ve talked about faith and creativity. It can be friendship, it can family, it can be spirit. I mean for the most part it could probably be coffee, a cold beer, fresh air. There is an endless list of things that links each and every individual on the planet. It’s what makes us human and it’s what makes the shared human experience so rich. But it seems that no matter how many things bond us we all too often choose to cast them aside in favour of seeking division. That might be down to race, gender, national borders, to name just a few. And this division leaks into the ‘smaller’ aspects of our existence. Maybe a colleague doesn’t like your proposal. Maybe your neighbour parks their car in front of your house. Or maybe someone you know doesn’t care about the Marvel franchise. We seek division all too often. But I’m here this evening to just throw out the idea that there is something that unites us all, and it transcends the human species. Climate change is happening, and it’s going to touch each and everyone one of us. No matter your religion, skin colour, sexuality or comic universe preference. The entire world is shifting and it’s scary. It’s time to put all difference aside and stand together to make change, and make it fast. This artwork was inspired by the notion that whether human or animal, we have to stand together and make change. A really good friend of mine said the other day that it’s time to ‘roll up our sleeves’. Here’s to that 🍻let’s roll them up and get stuck in. More news relating to this illustration soon. As always, big love, T x

Last summer, we participated in an urban heat island study alongside @noaa and @sciencemuseumofvirginia 🌤 The results showed that some #neighborhoods in Baltimore are living with #temperatures 16 degrees hotter than others--at the same time of day.

As you can imagine, these #overheated regions have a low #tree canopy coverage. Trees of course #shade and cool city streets, and we are working hard to ensure that #zipcode does not determine exposure to #extremeheat.

This #summer, we will be sharing what we know and what we’re learning about this #publichealth disparity. Whether right here in Baltimore because of lacking #green #infrastructure, or all over the world because of #climatechange, increasingly hot #weather is and will continue to be something we must address.

Studies show that the decade during which we could have made the most headway in reversing the effects of climate change was the 70s. Today, we must not undo all of the domestic and international efforts to decarbonize and to mitigate the effects of climate change. Mr. Mahesh Pandya is the founder of a Tech – Legal Socio-Environmental NGO Paryavaran Mitra based in Ahmedabad. He has dedicated his past 20 years into Environmental Advocacy. The Green Catalyst Program wouldn’t be possible without him. His work ethics and experience has immensely helped the program to grow exponentially. For instance, due to the efforts of Mahesh Pandya, more than 2000 acres of land was saved by conduction and intervention through public hearings. Also, his hard work and ambition led to resettle, rehabilitate and return billions of rupees back to the society.

Climate change disproportionally affects vulnerable communities. Modernist socio-technical systems such as electricity grids, water systems, transport systems may provide solutions for better quality of life for communities at risk. Dr. Chingwen Cheng, Assistant Professor Landscape Architecture at Arizona State University is the Working Group leader of the Vulnerable Communities Working Group at the APRU SCL conference in Sydney and will facilitate discussions around these pressing topics. Register to join the conference by this Saturday, June 22 by submitting your Expression of Interest to apruscl2019@gmail.com! Please DM for questions!

Black people in Galveston, Texas got the news on this day that they were free, even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed two and a half years prior. Black people continue to fight for equality because liberation cannot mean having to breathe contaminated air or drink toxic water, or be killed by police disproportionately because you are Black. So we commemorate this day as a reminder that Black liberation must happen within Black communities. And appreciate those who fought for Black liberation to get us to this point.

"Let's not just climb mountains, let's observe, think and change-act" because changes in climatic condition due to global warming becomes a matter of concern to all living beings. When we reach to the mountains and get to know that how this change is affecting glaciers ( source of freshwater used for livelihoods) due to insufficient snowfall that is required for glaciers growth. Now it's alarming situation for this planet to maintain balance and this planet alone cannot handle this situation, we must come forward to help because we are the only reason behind whatever things are happening in this planet. #climatechange #environmentalissues #environmentaljustice #beautifulplanetearth #glacier #mountain #concernworldwide

The 2019 Circular Economy Summit hosted by the Ellen McArthur Foundation was truly fascinating in recognising the efforts of a huge diversity of people within the circular/sustainable community! 💚
.
.
.
The speakers, which included Joaquin Ruiz (Chair & Director of Biosphere 2), Hugo Spowers (Founder of Riversimple), Tristam Stewart (founder of Toast Ale), Rhiana Gunn-Wright (Policy Director of New Consensus) and many more, took us on a journey of innovation, technology and the challenges that sustainability faces for new businesses. We were enlightened on the challenges with food, corals, rainforests 🌱 and water💧with Ruiz and the Green New Deal ♻️ and the battle between income inequality and climate change with Gunn-Write. We rode along Hugo Spowers in a Riversimple hydrogen fuelled cell eco car 🚗 and wore Erica Arena’s orange peel fashion 👗. We listened to Gerrard Street’s totally renewable headphones 🎧 and tasted Stuart’s Toast Ale - because when life gives you bread, make beer! 🍻
.
...and other incredible speakers and start-ups.

It's pretty surreal to see how close the water is getting to the highway over here🌊 I am reminded to cherish and try harder to protect these vulnerable places because in a few years, this stretch of coast could be gone.🏝️ A recent climate change study found that sea level rise may be a lot worse than previously predicted😰 Global mean sea level is predicted to reach about 1 ft by 2050 and 2.5 - 6.2 ft by 2100.📏 It doesn't seem like much in writing, but when you see the effects on a map, it really helps put things in perspective.👀 NOAA has a website (Google: "Sea Level Rise Viewer") which shows how devastating the impacts of sea level rise is towards our communities.👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Around half of the world's population and 70% of the world's megacities are found by the coast 🌊🏢 Solutions are complicated because past efforts to protect coastlines, like seawalls, actually contributed to faster erosion and beach loss.⌛To protect coastal communities and beaches, we need to implement and enforce policies that discourage hard infrastructure near the coast, and we need to encourage development further inland🚫🏨 lt is also critical to preserve the natural barriers, like coral reefs & sand dunes, that are already in place✊🐠🌱
